HEMINGWAY, Ernest (1899-1961). Green Hills of Africa . New York: Charles Scribner's Son, 1935. First edition, second printing, inscribed "with sincere admiration" to American actress and socialite Paulette Goddard . Originally serialized in Scribner's , this 1935 work of nonfiction detailed Hemingway's time hunting in East Africa. Goddard was a prominent leading actress in Hollywood's Golden Age. Like Hemingway, she was married four times, including to Charlie Chaplin, actor Burgess Meredith, and novelist Erich Maria Remarque—who, also like Hemingway, wrote a defining novel of the First World War. Described as "dynamite," in 1944, Time magazine reported that Goddard was just back in Manhattan from an eleven-week, 38,000-mile U.S.O. Camp Show tour in the China-Burma-India war theater, where she had been the first U.S. woman entertainer. Hanneman 13A. Octavo. Original green cloth (spine slightly faded).
