GLORIA TAMERRE PETYARRE Anmatyerre language, 1945 - 2021 Bush Medicine Leaves, 1994 acrylic on canvas 51 x 38 cm inscribed verso: Gloria Petyarre, Utopia Art Sydney, 7265 PROVENANCE Utopia Art, New South Wales, Cat No. 7265 Ian Rogers Fine Art, Victoria Coo-ee Aboriginal Art, New South Wales, Cat No. 17709 Robert & Elizabeth Caswell Collection, New South Wales thence by descent Raised in Anmatyerre, Gloria Petyarre was among the pioneering women who participated in the first art programs at Utopia in 1977. Early batik workshops marked a significant shift, establishing Central Desert women as leading figures in the development of contemporary Indigenous art. This classic work depicts the leaves of the Kurrajong tree, a plant valued in the Utopia region for its medicinal properties. Women traditionally collect and prepare the leaves, drawing out their healing qualities, a practice embedded within Awelye (women's ceremonial knowledge) that honours the land and sustains its fertility. Through her distinctive rhythmic brushwork, Petyarre evokes both the movement and presence of the leaves across the surface. In painting this subject, she affirms its cultural and spiritual importance, linking knowledge, care, and regeneration within Country. © GLORIA PETYARRE / Copyright Agency, 2026
