Giovanni Tommaso Minadoi - Turkey and Persia War [Complete Edition

1588 EDITION ON HISTORY, MIDDLE AGES, OTTOMAN EMPIRE, PERSIA, CHIVALRY, WAR HISTORY, MONARCHY, RELIGION by Giovanni Tommaso Minadoi (1549–1615), a physician, diplomat, secret agent, and historian of the Republic of Venice. In this book, he revealed to Europeans the behind-the-scenes events, battles, plots, and strategies of the Ottoman-Safavid War (1578–1590). The book contains a large and detailed map (height 223 x width 300 mm) of the Middle East (Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Iran, Egypt, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, the Caucasus, the Black Sea, the Caspian Sea, and the Red Sea) that helps illustrate army movements, locations, battles, and conquests. This map is not included in every edition. The Ottoman Empire, under the decree of Sultan Murad III, initiated the war in 1578 by launching a massive invasion into the Persian-Safavid-controlled Caucasus. The conflict was driven by a complex mix of opportunism, economics, and geopolitics, the religious difference between the Turks (Sunnis) and the Persians (Shias) was used merely as fuel to stoke hatred and fanaticism among the armies. Over a period of about eight years, Minadoi was repeatedly sent to serve as physician to the Venetian consuls in Constantinople (Turkey) and Aleppo (Syria); however, his mission also involved gathering intelligence, traveling, and infiltrating Turkish society by treating local elites. The city of Aleppo was a vital hub for the Ottoman Empire’s trade in silk, spices, slaves, carpets, and more; one of the objectives was to secure decrees from the Sultan in Constantinople to put an end to the harassment of Venetian merchants by corrupt Turkish officials. Minadoi leveraged his position as a physician to cultivate close relationships with authorities, traveling merchants, and soldiers returning from the eastern front. He acted as a secret agent, gathering firsthand accounts and the data that would form the basis of this book, as well as a more extensive confidential report for the Republic of Venice. The Ottoman Empire and Venice had recently clashed in 1572 at the Battle of Lepanto in the Mediterranean—arguably the largest naval battle in Renaissance history. Original contemporary binding in excellent condition, virtually intact. RARE 1588 COMPLETE EDITION, while the 1592 German edition, lacking the map, is currently for sale here for US$4,700.00: https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=22857402959; this second edition from 1588 is offered to you here at a fraction of that price. This is a expanded edition, featuring a big map and organized into nine books, whereas the first edition from the previous year lacked the map and comprised only four books. In addition to studying Turkish and Persian society, Minadoi continued his travels and research into Muslim medical practices. However, a sudden incident altered his plans. In September 1586, Minadoi set out on a pilgrimage to the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem; along the way, he was ambushed and attacked by Bedouins. This harrowing brush with death was the decisive factor in his permanent departure from the Middle East; he boarded a ship and arrived safely in Venice in December 1586. A true Renaissance man, Minadoi leveraged these travels and his research in the Middle East to meticulously document local medicinal herbs and plants, incorporating this regional pharmacological knowledge into his subsequent academic texts. THE TURCO-PERSIAN WAR HAD THE FOLLOWING RESULTS: A) VICTOR: The Ottoman Empire emerged as the decisive victor of the conflict, which formally concluded with the Treaty of Constantinople (also known as the Treaty of Ferhat Pasha) in 1590. B) SURRENDER: Following the assassination of the Safavid crown prince Hamza Mirza in 1586—the event where Minadoi’s contemporary account ends—the Safavid Empire of Persia plunged into severe internal chaos. The newly crowned Shah Abbas I was forced to sue for peace to avert his empire's total collapse and to defend the eastern frontier against invading Uzbek forces. C) CONQUERED TERRITORIES: The Ottomans conquered vast territories, extending as far as the Caspian Sea. The Safavids were compelled to cede the Caucasus, Georgia, Dagestan, Shirvan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and parts of Luristan and Khuzestan, as well as Tabriz—the former Safavid capital and a pivotal hub on the Silk Road. D) STRATEGIC CONSEQUENCES: Although the Ottomans had achieved a total military and diplomatic victory in 1590, the peace proved to be merely a pause in the rivalry. Shah Abbas I utilized the temporary truce to radically reorganize and modernize the Persian army, eventually launching a massive counter-offensive in 1603 that led to the reconquest of all lost territories. KEY REVELATIONS ABOUT TURKS AND PERSIANS IN THIS BOOK: E) RELIGIOUS SCHISM: Minadoi explained to the European audience that the fierce hostility between the two Islamic empires stemmed in part from the profound doctrinal divide between Ottoman Sunni Islam and Persian Shia Islam. F) GEOGRAPHY AND TOPOGRAPHICAL IDENTIFICATION: To ensure greater narrative clarity, the author included summaries for each book and a large new map. G) TACTICAL AND STRATEGIC DIFFERENCES: The text highlights that the Ottomans fielded highly disciplined infantry making extensive use of firearms and artillery, whereas Persian forces relied almost exclusively on formidable, fast-moving cavalry. KEY FIGURES OF THE WAR (1578–1590) H) OTTOMAN EMPIRE: The ruthless offensive in the Caucasus was initiated by Sultan Murad III. In the field, military operations were initially coordinated by Grand Vizier Lala Mustafa Pasha and subsequently brought to completion by the brilliant general Özdemiroğlu Osman Pasha. I) SAFAVID OR PERSIAN EMPIRE: ruled by Shah Mohammad Khodabanda, a politically weak sovereign afflicted with severe nearsightedness. The true heroic figure was his son, Crown Prince Hamza Mirza, who led military counter-offensives for years until his assassination in 1586.
