Tutte le aste / Arte, Pittura e Arti Grafiche / Giovanni Battista Ferrari (1584-1655) - Eiusdem floris et vaginae magnitudo

"NARCISO INDIANO LILIACEO" It is not a true narcissus, but an ancient synonymy name attributed to plants of the Amaryllidaceae family originating in South Africa, commonly known as Belladonna Lily 1633/38 Figure of the plant and its sheath A slender pennant with the Latin title winds around the two stems at the bottom. Hand-painted refined coloration Title: "Eiusdem floris et vaginae magnitudo” Plate 131 from the work DE FLORVM CVLTVRA LIBRI IV, published in Rome in 1633/38 Location: Calcography; FONDO BARBERINI; specimen 174A In excellent conservation condition for paper, printed on laid paper with a fragment of watermark, margins irregular but good beyond the copper plate. A botanist at heart, Ferrari is chiefly remembered for the treatise Flora, seu De florum cultura lib. 4, first published in Latin in 1633 and reprinted in Italian translation in 1638. The work, dedicated to Cardinal Francesco Barberini, (the Barberini Collection preserves the Fund) is very beautiful iconographically, having contributed illustrations and engravings by some of the most important artists of the Baroque period: drawings by Guido Reni, Pietro da Cortona, Giovanni Lanfranco and Andrea Sacchi, and engravings by Johann Friedrich Greuter, Anna Maria Vaiana and Claude Mellan. The aim of the work is to disseminate techniques for cultivating flowers and ornamental plants, especially exotic ones highly sought after in the seventeenth century (the so‑called “pilgrim flowers”). In the first book an introduction to gardening, providing an overview of flower cultivation and gardening; the second and third books deal with pilgrim flowers, while the fourth book is mainly devoted to floral decorations Engraving by Anna Maria Vaiana, 1604-1655 Active in Rome in the first half of the seventeenth century, she engraved most of the plates for Giovan Battista Ferrari’s De florum cultura.
