The first volume is from 1965, while the second and third are from 1966. This is one of the most extensive documentary works dedicated to the Italian events between 8 September 1943 and 1945, with particular attention to the Italian Social Republic, its military formations, the partisan war, and the operations on Italian soil. Of particular interest is the extraordinary iconographic apparatus: the three volumes are extremely rich in period photographs, documents, images of units and commanders, reproductions and military organigrams. Numerous photographs come from the documentation collected by the author during his research and today constitute a still hard-to-find iconographic repertoire in such an organic form. The work totals about 1,860 pages, widely illustrated. The three volumes feature the characteristic red publisher bindings with gilt lettering and borders on the boards and spines. From the photographs one can appreciate the excellent overall condition of the copy: clean interiors and well-preserved, solid bindings, pages and photographic apparatus in very good condition. Only slight and physiological signs of wear on the spines (in volume I at the top) and at the ends of the bindings, compatible with the age of the volumes and clearly visible in the photographs.
