Total edition 110 numbered copies, XXV copies in Roman numerals, 21 copies signed from A to Z, 15 P.A. The work with frame measures 88x68 cm. The Artist depicts himself in a sumptuous seventeenth-century suit, with a lace collar, plumed hat and a sword at his side. The pose is noble and theatrical, evoking historical figures of the great European tradition and his connection to classicism, with the ideal of the artist-philosopher, distant from modern fashions and near a suspended moment in time. The choice of historical costume is not accidental: De Chirico, founder of Metaphysical painting, aimed to assert a return to memory, mystery and form, against the ephemerality of the avant-garde. The sparse setting, with the yellow ground and a flat horizon, recalls the metaphysical landscapes: silent, timeless places. The work is overall in good condition. It is framed with a mat that partially covers the edges of the sheet; there are some foxing spots on the paper, mostly covered by the mat, normal signs of aging. Giorgio de Chirico’s graphic activity represents a fundamental chapter of his output. The lithographs of the seventies, such as this one, offer collectors direct access to the artist’s metaphysical language, with images of strong suggestion and excellent technical execution. Giorgio de Chirico (Volos, Greece 1888 – Rome 1978) is the founder of Metaphysical painting. His silent squares, classical statues, horses and mythological seascapes deeply influenced twentieth-century art. Alongside these themes, his self-portraits and metaphysical figures reflect a constant exploration of identity and memory, becoming symbols of the enigmatic condition of modern man. His graphic production, elegant and conceptually dense, is today highly valued by the international collecting market.
