His studies testify to the erudite method typical of eighteenth-century antiquarians, founded on the comparison between monuments, inscriptions, iconographic testimonies, and Greco-Roman literature. This work was dedicated to the Marquis Alessandro Gregorio Capponi, an important collector and central figure of Roman antiquarian culture of the period. The reference to the Capitoline collections also places the publication in the context of the formation of the Capitoline Museum, opened to the public precisely in the 1730s. PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION The work was printed in Rome in 1737 at the typography of Rocco Bernabò, located “prope Fontem Trivii,” near the Trevi Fountain. It presents itself as an autonomous antiquarian publication of just 40 pages, intended mainly for a small circle of scholars, collectors, and erudites interested in Roman antiquities.
