Gilles - Statuette

Expressionist figurative sculpture in glazed ceramic – Signed "Gilles", dated 1963. Magnificent studio ceramic anthropomorphic sculpture from the early 1960s. This captivating work features a vertically stretched bust with a emaciated, melancholic face, evoking the artistic influence of Modigliani portraits or post-war expressionist works. The piece stands out for its remarkable glaze work and pour of enamels. It sports a rich, contrasting color palette: an intense turquoise/cerulean blue on the face and bust, contrasted by a textured ochre-brown headdress, all enveloped in violet and burgundy shades on the sides and the base. The surface shows a natural, glossy craquelure (firing cracks) under the glaze, demonstrating skilled firing technique. The piece is entirely unique (one-of-a-kind art pottery piece). • Signature: Hand-signed in green oxide under the base "Gilles" and dated "1963". • Style: Expressionist / Brutalist / Mid-Century Studio Pottery. • Fine art ceramics / Sculptures and figures post-war & modern • Date of manufacture: 1963 (Mid-Century / 20th century) • Country of origin: France / Belgium (characteristic style of European Francophone studio pottery of the 1960s). • Material: Earthenware, stoneware or earthenware with glaze and polychrome enamels. Overall condition: Good overall condition for an art ceramic over 60 years old. • Details to note (visible in photos): A glaze flaw/firing crack is present at the base along the lower edge (revealing raw clay, see close-up), as well as a tiny material loss on the upper-left edge of the headdress. No major structural cracking. The work retains all visual integrity. Careful and fast shipping."
