Floral piece with irises and a bird Oil on canvas, unsigned, circa 1890–1910 WORK In front of a smooth brown ground stand blue irises, yellow blossoms and a dark red bloom among palm fronds; above, a flying bird with extended wings. The blossoms are impasto and painted with fine brushwork, the ground thin and calm. Decorative salon painting of the period around 1900 in a Jugendstil plaster frame of the same era. Technique: oil on canvas, on stretcher, not doubled Image size: 77.7 x 57.3 cm Frame size: 96.8 x 77.0 x 5.0 cm Framed weight: approx. 6.5 kg Signature: unsigned. On the back of the canvas frame there is an old pencil inscription with name and Braunschweig address (previous owner or frame maker, no artist’s signature). CONDITION Used, with signs of aging; please see the photos as part of the description. - In the light areas (irises, yellow blossoms) pronounced craquelure with flaking: the paint layer has fractured in a net-like pattern there, see close-up photo. In the darker areas the paint layer remains closed. - On the back three old patches (repaired areas), hardly visible from the front. - Varnish aged and dull. Not cleaned, not restored. FRAME AND HANGING Art Nouveau plaster frame, gilded with a warm gold finish, featuring a hollow keel and stylized foliate frieze, contemporary to the painting. The frame belongs to the lot. - One corner has a miter open, the plaster cracked with gaps down to the chalk ground; small losses to the frieze. - No glazing, no backing protection. The painting is held in a metal lath frame. - Hanging: one eyelet at the top center. Please check before hanging and replace if necessary; the framed image weighs about 6.5 kg. In the photo: at one corner the mitre is open with a crack through the plaster and gaps down to the chalk ground, smaller losses to the frieze.
