Tutte le aste / Altro / German school (XIX) - Elegant Damesportret - NO RESERVE
Attribution: German School (19th–20th century) Title: Elegant Portrait of a Lady Technique and Support: oil on canvas Dimensions: 76.5 × 62 cm; with frame 96 × 81 cm Signature: unsigned The painting shows a half-length portrait of a woman against a landscape background. Her face is rendered almost frontally, with her gaze directed at the viewer. Her brown hair is styled up. She wears a white, generously gathered gown with gold-colored accents at the upper arms and a long necklace of light beads. A raised hand is placed in front of the chest, at the level of the necklace and the converging folds of fabric. To the right stand tree trunks; foliage fills the upper portion. To the left the background opens to a blue sky and a low-lying landscape. Technique and material analysis The canvas is stretched on a wooden wane frame. The weave texture remains locally visible through the paint layer. The face is built up with gradual tonal transitions and individual accents around the eyes, nose and mouth. In the clothing, longer brushstrokes follow the fold lines; light paint passages alternate with gray, blue and yellowish shadow tones. The foliage is developed with shorter, looser strokes. Locally the paint surface shows some relief and fine craquelé. Composition and formal analysis The figure occupies the largest part of the vertical picture plane. The head forms the upper focal point; the necklace, the neckline and the raised hand connect this with the center of the composition. The right-hand tree trunks bound the space, while the open sky on the left suggests depth. The light face and white clothing contrast with the dark green and brown background. Shadows under the chin and between the folds give volume to the figure. Stylistic and art-historical context The recognizable anatomy, plastically modeled form and attention to clothing details align with Realism and the representational portrait tradition. The more precise treatment of the face is combined with a freer brushwork in clothing and landscape. Within the designation German School, the dating is limited to the nineteenth or twentieth century; a closer dating or individual attribution has not been established. Comparable artists Franz von Lenbach, Friedrich August von Kaulbach, John Singer Sargent, Giovanni Boldini Condition The painting has recently been cleaned and re-varnished. There are some old retouchings present. The paint layer shows locally fine craquelé. The frame has scratches, wear and small damages to the finish. Conclusion This unsigned portrait of a lady falls within the German School attribution to the realistic portrait tradition of the nineteenth or twentieth century. The work has been recently cleaned and re-varnished, with preservation of some old retouchings and local craquelé.
