The art card is hand-signed in black ink by Gerhard Richter on the lower section. About the work The life-size painting “Ema (Nude on a Staircase)” from 1966 shows Richter’s then-wife Ema (Ema Kutsch), naked, barefoot and with lowered gaze, descending a staircase. The depiction is characterized by the photographically sharp focus Richter is known for, while the soft contours and flowing transitions give the figure an almost dreamlike appearance, as if viewing the scene through a light fog. With this motif, Richter also references Marcel Duchamp’s famous painting “Nude Descending a Staircase,” yet interprets the theme in his own distinctive way.
