Condition: Good condition: the canvas original, unlined and untorn on its strainer; two small, stable losses of paint, each under half a centimetre, in secondary passages away from the figures (the pale wall above the stalls and the mauve passage at lower left), neither filled nor retouched; a fine network of age cracks in the impasto and a light film of surface grime; the carved frame intact. The whole picture seems to move. Georges Berger (1908–1976), a Norman by birth, settled in Montmartre and became a close friend of Gen Paul, the great Expressionist of the Butte; the two painted the same streets, cafés and markets, and Berger’s hurried, calligraphic touch, his spare palette pierced by sudden bursts of colour, shows how much the friendship shaped him. Montmartre, Honfleur and the quays of the Seine were his lifelong themes. Signed ‘Berger’ at the lower left.
