George van Raemdonck - 1 Original pencil drawing...

George van Raemdonck (Antwerp, August 28, 1888 – Boechout, January 26, 1966) was a Belgian comic artist, cartoonist, book illustrator, book cover designer and painter who worked in the Netherlands. Van Raemdonck was not the first Dutch, but the first Flemish comic artist. In Flanders he, however, enjoyed much less recognition than in the Netherlands. Life and career Van Raemdonck's father, a pharmacist by profession, was also a capable draftsman. Because Van Raemdonck possessed musical talent, his father sent him to the conservatoire to study the violin. At the same time he devoted himself to painting and in 1903, at fifteen, he enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, where he studied under Franz Courtens and where in 1913 he received the De Keyers Prize. At that time he was already drawing illustrations for various popular novels and for the illustrated weekly Lange Wapper. Because of the First World War, Van Raemdonck fled to the Netherlands on October 9, 1914 with wife and child, where he began drawing political cartoons for De Amsterdammer (now De Groene Amsterdammer). His first 'kartoen' De dikke Bertha, based on the giant cannon of the German army, appeared in De Amsterdammer on December 6, 1914. Collaboration with A.M. de Jong The Dutch writer A.M. de Jong was impressed by Van Raemdonck's work and asked him at the end of 1917 to illustrate the children's book Vacant Days. A friendship developed between the two. In 1920 Van Raemdonck switched to De Notenkraker, for which he drew many political cartoons until the magazine ended in July 1936. In this period the artist campaigned against Hitler and Nazism as early as 1932. In 1922 De Jong engaged him to make drawings for the text strip 'Bulletje en Boonestaak'. This strip appeared from May 2, 1922 for fifteen years, until November 17, 1937 in Het Volk and Voorwaarts. The strip is nowadays regarded as a classic, partly because of the bold drawings. Van Raemdonck regularly let De Jong appear in his drawings, and De Jong in turn tried to weave Van Raemdonck into his text. Bulletje en Bonestaak (at the time: De wereldreis van Bulletje en Boonestaak) was one of the first Dutch strips to achieve great success. From May 2, 1922 to November 17, 1937 this socialist-engaged text strip, drawn by the Belgian Flemish artist George van Raemdonck who had fled Belgium in 1914 for World War I, with texts by the famous writer A.M. de Jong, appeared in the Dutch newspapers Het Volk and later also Voorwaarts. Bulletje en Bonestaak became the favorites of socialist Netherlands, and the success rested partly on the fact that the creators did not insert a sugary pedagogical storyline. It was also the first strip against which moralists warned. The graphic narrative was considered corrupting, as the strip characters swore, spat and sometimes even walked around naked. Later editions were usually published in censored form. The accompanying books (66 known) reached a total edition of 176,441. Bulletje en Bonestaak appeared as the first Dutch strip in 1924 in another language (German) and then in 1926 also in French (Fil de Fer et Boule de Gomme). This lot contains a stunning "strip page" from Arbeiders pers, in the style of the young Willy Vandersteen, which seems to have inspired him quite a bit. Just look at Rikki and Wiske. Obvious. See the last 2 photos as an example (these are not included in this lot). Top right signed by the Great Master. Very unique to own a true "strip page" by Van Raemsdonk. Such a comic drawing with a short story he rarely produced... See also the photos that are part of the description and give a good impression of what is on offer. This fine item will be well packed and sent by registered parcel post.
