PTOLEMAEUS, Claudius (c.100-c.170) and MÜNSTER, Sebastian (1488–1552). Geographia universalis . Basel: Heinrich Petri, 1542. [ Bound with: ] STOEFFLER, Johannes. Coelestium rerum disciplinaie, atque totius sphaericae peritissimi ... Mainz: Peter Jordan, 1535. Second edition of Münster's Ptolemy, with 48 double-page maps, including three maps relating to the Americas . Münster's work was first published in 1540 and was a revision of Willibald Pirckheimer's translation for which Munster redesigned the maps and added an appendix. The maps were printed from the same blocks, with occasional variant captions and the woodcut text borders in a different order. In the present copy, the Americas map is Burden's state 1 (with "NOVVS ORBIS" in North and South America, and its heading matching state 1 Latin text for 1542, with a black leaf motif before the title). In addition to the world map, the Americas are also shown in his map of Scandinavia which pictures the Canadian maritime regions as Terra nova sive de Bacolhos. Stoeffler's treatise, the second work in this volume, is on the making and use of the astrolabe and was originally printed in Oppenheim in 1513. First work with 48 double-page maps; second work with three plates and numerous woodcut diagrams in text. (First work: lacking front endpaper, corner of title-page restored, marginal dampstain to prelims, a few leaves browned, two maps with small losses at margin, map 30 Anglia with small repairs along centerfold; second work: one plate on trimmed leaf; a couple diagrams with short closed tears or old adhesive; three diagrams with folding extensions, ?possibly supplied, one partially detached, one partially wormed, and one heavily repaired.) Early limp vellum, manuscript title on spine, ties partially present (front free endpaper lacking, a few stains). Provenance : early ink annotations.
