French Revolution 1793 – 26 original historic newspapers – Gazette Nationale ou Le Moniteur Universel Special and historically interesting collection of 26 original French newspapers from 1793, published during one of the most turbulent periods of the French Revolution. These are issues of the famous Gazette Nationale, ou Le Moniteur Universel, one of the main contemporary sources of news about the French Revolution. The collection dates from 16 March to 17 April 1793 and comprises largely a consecutive series of newspaper issues. An original Supplément à la Gazette Nationale is also present. These newspapers appeared during the second year of the French Republic, just a few months after the execution of King Louis XVI on 21 January 1793. France was at that time in the midst of a political and military crisis. The collection covers, among other periods, the following events: * The establishment of the Revolutionary Tribunal in March 1793. * The French defeat at Neerwinden on 18 March 1793. * The political and military crisis around General Dumouriez. * The establishment of the Committee of Public Safety on 6 April 1793, which would later play a central role during the Reign of Terror. * The debates and decisions of the National Convention. The newspapers contain political reporting, records of parliamentary debates, decrees and international news from various European countries. The historical events mentioned are characteristic of the period. It is not established that every event is actually discussed in the respective issues. The collection consists of original, more than 230-year-old printed newspapers. The issues are produced on historical paper, with the characteristic typography of the late eighteenth century. Several issues consist of originally double-folded sheets, thus containing multiple printed pages. The collection forms a particularly tangible documentary record of the early period of the French Republic. In good historical condition, considering the age of over 230 years. The newspapers show normal signs of aging and use, including light to moderate discoloration, folds, small tears, spots and localized damage to the paper edges. The printed texts are clearly legible.
