Special features The work presents an exceptional cycle of 26 color mezzotints that Fritz Janschka created in 1973 for selected passages from James Joyce’s famous novel Ulysses. The complete sequence is reproduced in the book in color reproductions. The premium edition also includes an independent original print with the title “Bloom Molly.” This is personally signed by the artist in pencil and numbered 949/999. The photographed original sheet shows a detailed, surreal-looking motif with interwoven figures and typographic elements. The visible plate margin underscores the original graphic character of the print. About the work James Joyce’s Ulysses, first published in book form in 1922, is one of the most significant works of literary modernism. Fritz Janschka developed a distinct pictorial interpretation of it. His compositions combine letterforms, human figures, and fantastical elements into a fanciful visual engagement with Joyce’s novel. In addition to the 26 color illustrations, the edition contains the corresponding passages from the English original text as well as the German translation by Hans Wollschläger. A foreword by John Norton-Smith, a concordance, and bibliographic and exhibition notes complete the publication.
