French School (XIX) - Vue du port de Binic, Côtes-d’Armor

Fine antique oil painting dated 1832, very likely depicting the Binic port in the Côtes-d’Armor. The composition shows a harbor basin bordered by quays and old houses, with several boats in the foreground. In the background, the village rises gradually around a bell tower that dominates the rooftops, a feature particularly characteristic of old views of Binic. Comparison with several representations and old postcards of Binic port shows interesting similarities in the overall organization of the basin, the quays, the houses, and the bell tower. Given the early date of the work, 1832, and the urban transformations since, the identification is nevertheless presented with caution as a presumed view of Binic. The palette, composed of ochre, beige, gray, green and blue tones, along with the slightly veiled light, gives the whole a soft atmosphere that is typically Breton. The work is unsigned and kept in its old carved and patinated wooden frame.
