French Art Deco Crystal Cameo Glass Vase by Paul Nicolas circa 1920

Paul Nicolas classic French Art Deco crystal cameo vase designed and made by Paul Nicolas in red over orange decorated with flowering branches, signed P. Nicolas in the cameo- (see image 4). This vase was acquired by us directly from the Paul Nicolas family collection. P. Nicolas signed pieces are very rare. Paul Nicolas was a master glass maker, artist and leading light of the Ecole de Nancy. He worked for Emile Galle (and later his son-in-law at the ‘Establissements Galle’) until just after the First World War, ultimately as their chief designer. He later set up his own workshop making crystal cameo glass for Saint Louis, under the brand name D’Argental and also making glass under his own name. At the Great Paris World Exhibitions Paul Nicolas was awarded Bronze in 1900, Silver in 1925 and Gold in 1937.
