Francis Sallès (1926-2003) is a French painter. Born in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, he spends much of his life in Paris. He fully aligns with the artistic movement of New figuration. This pictorial current emerged in the mid-20th century in reaction to abstraction. Sallès develops there a singular style mixing human silhouettes and objects. His canvases frequently explore themes of reinvented still lifes. Among his notable achievements, one finds The Captive Objects painted in 1958. His works are distinguished by a strong tension between forms. The artist regularly exhibits his creations in prestigious Paris galleries. The Ariel Gallery thus showcases his work during the 1970s. The film world takes an interest in his work, notably attracting John Huston. The famous American director indeed acquired some of his canvases. Other major contemporary artists, such as Karel Appel, collect his paintings. His works still appear today in international auctions. He died in 2003 in Paris, leaving the mark of a striking modern figurative artist.
