A Trophy Note from the Cleveland District Fr. 785. 1918 $5 Federal Reserve Bank Note. Cleveland. PMG Superb Gem Uncirculated 67 EPQ. Elvadore R. Fancher Courtesy Autograph. Spared from the harsh realities of circulation in commercial channels. This $5 Federal Reserve Bank Note issued under the Series of 1918 offers a sight that seems impossible in 2026. Issued close to 110 years ago by virtue of the series imprint and signature combination that was discontinued in the late 1910s, this note looks as if it had only been cut from its constituent sheet in the poorly ventilated workspaces of the Bureau of Engraving & Printing in the District of Columbia. Here impeccably original traits such as margins that evoke the sharpness of a razor complement bountiful selvage expected of the grade assigned while familiar forms beckon with uncommon color and detail. Those forms are nonetheless spoken to by Lincoln's engraved portrait adapted from an iconic photograph taken by Anthony Berger in 1864 and the title block that offers a noted similarity to the arrangements seen on the Series of 1902 National Bank Notes which would be issued through the late 1920s. To that end, this example is one of the finest PMG has encountered for this Friedberg Number and also features a three-digit serial number of "D207A" and the penned Courtesy Autograph of Elvadore R. Fancher who served as the sole "Governor" of the Cleveland district before the title became "President" in 1935.
