Fr. 347. 1890 $1 Treasury Note. PCGS Banknote Superb Gem Uncirculated 67 PPQ.

A Superb Gem Uncirculated Rarity for the Series of 1890 Sole Finest at PCGS Banknote Fr. 347. 1890 $1 Treasury Note. PCGS Banknote Superb Gem Uncirculated 67 PPQ. An impressive note in an aesthetic sense, but in a technical sense the quality of this note remains unmatched. Featuring a bespectacled portrait of Edwin M. Stanton who served as the Secretary of War under both Lincoln and Johnson until disagreements saw Stanton resign his office after an impeachment effort against Johnson failed. Under the Grant Administration, Stanton was nominated and later confirmed by the United States Senate for the position of Associate Justice on the United States Supreme Court after Associate Justice Robert C. Grier announced his retirement, but Stanton died before taking office at the age of 55 becoming the only confirmed nominee to die before seeing active service with the Court. In the years and decades that followed, numerous honors were paid to Stanton following his death and one of those was his placement on the $1 Treasury Notes that were placed into circulation because of the economic and fiscal deficiencies of the 1890s. The earliest of these notes which depicted the likes of Stanton were issued under the Series of 1890 before the design was ultimately discontinued in the late 1890s with the Series of 1891. On both series imprints, Stanton's portrait sits at left, but for this particular Friedberg Number it sits opposite a large spiked reddish-brown Treasury seal which serves to draw the viewer's attention even in the midst of a veritable tapestry of ornate detail. Ornate denomination counters and complex intertwining arrangements of floral elements accentuate otherwise ordinary elements of banknote design while the back is crammed with detail by way of rich geometric design elements that leave no room for empty space and account for a visual spectacle which would soon be lost with the subsequent Series of 1891 that reflected the Treasury's preference for "open space" as an anti-counterfeiting safeguard. Together these elements are not only a fine testament to the nature of this specific design, but also a testament to the normalized aesthetic excess of the period that would be slowly replaced over the coming years and decades in favor of more blasé compositions such as the Series of 1914 and Series of 1923. Yet these elements are brought to a form that can be considered truly exceptional by virtue of the grade assigned. Here crisp detail echoes the very day this note was printed while even the smallest of details reflect a crisp impression that effortlessly works to complement the grade assigned independent of the numerical grade seen on the label. Held together with the distinctiveness of the Series of 1890, little is left to doubt that bidding will be competitive for this exceptional note before it crosses the auction block likely amidst strong interest from bidders as opportunities like these for the condition-focused collector are few and far between regardless of the type or denomination.
