Fr. 129. 1878 $20 Legal Tender Note. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63. Reflective of a hoard of notes that was allegedly sourced from some nameless bank. This Friedberg Number represents one that would otherwise be unseen at this grade level if it weren't for the aforementioned discovery all those years ago. Bold eye appeal is matched and exemplified by crisp knife-like margins and a paper body absent any traces of technical circulation. The remarkable thing about this specimen though are the aesthetic qualities demonstrated by various elements. The pinkish-red hues of the Treasury overprint are nothing short of warm and provide a fine contrast against the balance of the design and simultaneously serve to reflect the aesthetic dictates of the period. By a similar measure, the blue coloration reflective of the process favored by the Wilcox Company in producing its patented security paper meant to frustrate counterfeits is particularly bold and evocative of the tropical waters of the Caribbean or South Pacific and lends another layer of contrast to this composition that is largely represented by its boring counterparts issued under the Series of 1880. Held together one will recognize that this is indeed a superior note that has rightly earned its laurels and one that should easily garner much in the way of interest from bidders.
