Four-Legged Stool – West Africa - Burkina Faso (No reserve price)

Description of the object : Proposed title : Four-Leg Stool – West Africa Object type : Traditional furniture / Ethnographic object Material : Carved wood (likely a dense local timber such as iroko or African walnut) Origin: West Africa (may evoke the styles of the Lobi, Senufo or Gurunsi peoples) Formal description : This monoxylous stool (carved from a single block of wood) rests on five massive conical feet, evenly spaced. The seat is gently curved, asymmetrical, with edges softened by wear, suggesting prolonged use. The wood is patinated, dark, with visible marks of hand work and age. Function : Originally a utilitarian object, used as a personal seat in traditional societies—often reserved for a chief, an elder, or a figure of authority. In some cultures, the stool is also regarded as a symbolic object, linked to the earth, identity, or status. Style and aesthetics : Minimalist, robust, balanced. The absence of ornamentation enhances its functional beauty. It embodies an aesthetic of the essential, where every line stems from use, every form from tradition. Contemporary interpretation : This type of furniture today finds its place as an object of art or raw design, valued for its authenticity, sculptural power, and connection to ancient cultures.
