Cymatoceras is a fossil genus of nektonic marine cephalopod mollusks whose documentation dates back to the Early Cambrian. Morphologically, the Cretaceous specimens shared many traits with modern Nautilus. The shell is globose, with a rounded whorl section, planispiral, ranging from slightly evolved to involute with closed umbilici. Cymatoceras species were nektonic, active hunters, with feeding habits considered, in line with today’s, to be protein consumers. The thickness of the Cymatoceras shell appears to indicate greater resistance to the hydrostatic pressure of deep-sea environments. It has been calculated that they could reach depths of about 250 m, given that the simple septa of nautiloids are adapted to high hydrostatic pressures. Incredibly beautiful lot: 1.9 kg (length 14.5 cm, width 11 cm, height 18 cm) for this beautiful fossil nautilus Cymatoceras.
