Folding screen with Nongyu 弄玉 playing the flute - Lacquered wood

A tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) depicting Nongyu 弄玉 playing the flute beneath a pine tree. An attendant sits beside her as a small bird flies across the gold-leaf sky. Rocky shores and flowing water carry the scene across the full width of the screen, while the figures’ richly patterned robes draw the eye to the right. The subject recalls the Chinese legend of Nongyu, daughter of Duke Mu of Qin. The immortal Xiao Shi 蕭史 taught her to play the flute in imitation of the phoenix’s call, a story captured in the phrase “playing the flute to summon the phoenix” 吹簫引鳳. Painted in ink and colour on mulberry paper and gold leaf, with silk borders and a lacquered frame. Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912–1926). Dimensions: Height 173 cm, total width 377.2 cm (2 panels of 64.2 cm and 4 panels of 62.2 cm). In very good condition, with age-related signs of wear on both sides and a small blemish on the left panel. Please refer to the photographs for a clear condition reference. When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
