"It is 1464, and Dorothy Dunnett plunges us into the Age of Discovery, among men of vision who suddenly finnd the Mediterranean world too small for their talents. Most daring of them all is the merchant-banker Nicholas vander Poele, a brilliant maverick who has risen by his wits from dyer's apprentice to master of international trade, politics, and intrigue. In Venice, unknown enemies threaten to destroy Nicholas's company and bank. To protect his fortune and expand his commercial empire, the audacious young man sets sail for the fabled, gold-rich lands of Africa. His officers and subordinates, wary of him yet enthralled by his complex personality, are at his side, and so is Gelis van Borselen, who holds him responsible for the death of her sister, Katelina. Crossing ocean, desert, and jungle, Nicholas and his companions find a land of terrible beauty where the risks are unnumbered but the rewards are riches beyond men's dreams. In a series of hair-raising adventures, they experience Africa's perilous mixture of brutality and grandeur: the horror of the slave trade; the ferocity of climate, man, and beast; the austere nobility of the Islamic culture of Timbuktu. In this terrain rife with danger and oportunity, some of the company will die, some will come to understand great truths, some will find love and others revenge - but all will be changed by their terrifying and thrilling introduction to a new world. Scales of Gold represents Dorothy Dunnett at her finest: a novel brimming with captivating, endlessly fascinating characters who inhabit a time and place so fully realized that we feel we can enter it and share their exploits." - from the inner front jacket flap.
