George Gregory's first substantial original work, comprising a wide-ranging collection of essays on history, society, politics, language, religion, education and moral philosophy. This work was sufficiently successful to lead to a second edition, published two years later. Among the subjects considered are the progress of manners and society, the influence of physical and moral causes upon the human mind, superstition, political authority, freedom of speech and the press, and much more. Of particular interest are Gregory's discussions of the status and education of women and his extended treatment of slavery and the slave trade, in which he examines contemporary arguments for slavery alongside the cruelties of the Atlantic passage and the economic consequences of abolition. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in minor loss to calf; heavier to spine ends and joints. Joints cracked, but firm. Slight rubbing to boards. Rubbing and spine with creasing and surface loss. Bookplate of Robert Dymond, Bolton Hall, to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Small 1 inch closed tear to title page, extending from gutter. Pages bright and clean if slightly age toned. Slight offsetting to first and last few leaves. Light scattered spotting, heavier to first and last few leaves, fore edge, and the odd leaf. Light cockling to leaves. Very Good
