[First Edition] A Companion to Homer Wace

A Companion to Homer, edited by Alan J. B. Wace and Frank H. Stubbings, published by Macmillan & Co. Ltd., London, and St. Martin's Press, New York, 1962. First Edition. A substantial collaborative study of Homer and the world of the Iliad and Odyssey, bringing together leading classical scholars to examine the poems from literary, historical, archaeological, linguistic, and cultural perspectives. The volume explores the Homeric question, the composition and transmission of the epics, language and style, religion and mythology, warfare, society, geography, art, and the material culture of the Bronze Age and early Greek world. Particular attention is given to the relationship between Homeric tradition and archaeological discoveries at sites associated with the epics, including Mycenae, Troy, Ithaca, and Pylos. Extensively illustrated with photographs, archaeological plans, maps, drawings, and examples of ancient art and artifacts. Edited by distinguished archaeologist Alan J. B. Wace, noted particularly for his work at Mycenae, and classical scholar Frank H. Stubbings. An important mid-twentieth-century reference work on Homeric scholarship and the historical world underlying the Greek epic tradition. Hardcover in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Illustrated throughout. Light shelfwear only.
