firma - Rare Passeport de l'Empire Napoléonien — Strasbourg

• Era / Period: First Empire (Napoleon I). • Exact date: August 14, 1809. • Place of issue: Strasbourg, Bas-Rhin Department. • Document type: Internal passport (pursuant to the law of 28 Vendémiaire Year VI). Details and collecting interest: Superb and authentic official document of the Napoleonic imperial administration “In the Name of Napoleon, Emperor of the French.” This passport was issued in Strasbourg by the General Commissioner of Police to a 19-year-old tailor named Jean Daniel Kohl, originally from Mannheim (Grand Duchy of Baden), to allow him to travel freely. The document is particularly interesting for its complete “Description” column on the left, precisely describing the wearer's physical characteristics at a time well before the invention of photography (height 1.68 m, gray eyes, blond hair, average nose, round chin, etc.). The document includes the holder’s original signature (“Kohl”) as well as that of the Strasbourg General Commissioner of Police. Notable visual elements: • Stunning header engravings of the Empire’s General Police. • Large Imperial Coat of Arms of Napoleon I at the center (Imperial Eagle). • Three distinct fiscal and administrative ink stamps at the top, and a large dry/seal wax stamp in red at the bottom left, very well preserved. • Period handwritten notes on the back or margin (passage visas dated 1809).
