Finely sculpted artistic sculpture depicting a realistic...

Handcrafted serpentinite sculpture in the shape of a lizard, carved in Peru — This extraordinary sculpture represents a finely carved iguana specimen, handmade from a single block of serpentine. Serpentine, a mineral in the silicate group, typically forms through the serpentinization of ultramafic rocks, a metamorphic process that occurs in the presence of aqueous fluids. Its cryptocrystalline structure and moderate hardness (about 2.5–4 on the Mohs scale) make it an ideal material for carving and artistic work, while maintaining notable resilience. The piece has been deftly modeled to exploit the stone’s intrinsic characteristics. Visual analysis reveals a rich and varied color range, with a dominance of tones from deep bottle green to olive green, interwoven with lighter veins, almost cream or yellow-ochre, and incursions of gray-violet in some basal areas. This natural polychromy contributes to defining the form and depth of the animal. The surface features alternating areas polished to a mirror finish that enhance the waxy luster typical of serpentine, and finely incised zones simulating the scaly texture of the iguana’s skin, imparting notable tactile realism. The eyes are accented by small red inserts, which impart liveliness to the subject. Although serpentine is a ubiquitous mineral, this specimen comes from Peru, a region with a long tradition in stone carving art, particularly for ritual and decorative objects. The Andean geological context is known for the presence of complex ophiolites and metamorphic massifs where serpentine forms abundantly. Peruvian craftsmanship is evident in the ability to interpret and enhance the stone’s aesthetic peculiarities, transforming it into a work of art. The artistic quality of this carving is high, characterized by a detailed and proportionate anatomical rendering of the iguana, from the sturdy head and dorsal crest to the clawed legs and curling tail. The animal’s stance suggests a moment of attentive observation, almost a challenge. The artist has successfully integrated the stone’s natural veins into the representation, using them to accentuate the muscular contours and the sculpture’s three-dimensionality, turning potential imperfections into distinctive design elements. The condition is excellent, with no evident signs of wear or damage. The sculpture rests on an integrated base, part of the original block, ensuring stability and display balance. The surface is well maintained, testimony to meticulous care and careful conservation over time. This piece does not require external supports and is ready to be displayed immediately, enriching any environment with its dramatic presence. From a collecting standpoint, it is an object of notable interest, blending the mineral’s natural elegance with human sculptural skill. The fusion of art and earth science makes this carving a unique piece, appreciated by both mineral lovers and connoisseurs of ethnic and decorative art. Its size and substantial weight make it a focal point in a collection or as a prestigious furnishing element, a tangible example of beauty arising from the intersection of geology and culture."} }{}** Note: The trailing extra braces indicate formatting glitch?
