Figurine - Porcelain half-doll with fabric skirt - Porcelain

Rare Antique c.1920s Porcelain Half Doll Boudoir Lampshade – Original Period Textiles – 28cm Full auction description A particularly impressive and increasingly difficult-to-find antique porcelain half-doll boudoir lampshade, dating approximately to the 1920s–1930s, retaining its elaborate period textile shade and presented in remarkably good condition. This is a substantial example, standing approximately 28 cm high overall, and is considerably larger and more elaborate than the small pincushion half dolls more commonly encountered. The porcelain figure depicts an elegant lady in an 18th-century-inspired courtly style, with an elaborate powdered coiffure formed from beautifully moulded curls and ringlets cascading down the back of her neck. Her face is delicately painted with finely defined eyes and brows, softly blushed cheeks and a small painted mouth. The pale pearlescent tones used on the elaborate hairstyle give the figure an especially refined appearance. The pose is particularly attractive. Both arms are raised gracefully towards the neckline, with the hands beautifully modelled and the individual extended fingers remarkably surviving intact. These delicate fingers are amongst the most vulnerable parts of antique half dolls and their survival is an important feature of this example. The porcelain figure forms the top of an impressive bell-shaped boudoir lampshade, dressed in pale blush-pink satin-type fabric woven with a repeating decorative motif. The front opens to reveal a contrasting cream woven floral panel edged with delicate period lace. A deep navy/black velvet ribbon and large bow provides a striking contrast to the soft pink fabric and creates the appearance of an elaborate period gown. The internal construction of the shade also survives, including its fabric-lined framework and central fitting, as shown in the photographs. The combination of porcelain figure and textile shade creates the appearance of a beautifully dressed lady in a voluminous ball gown—a classic and highly decorative form of early 20th-century boudoir lighting. Measurements approximately: * Porcelain half doll: 9 cm high * Overall height: 28 cm * Maximum width: 16 cm * Maximum depth: 16 cm Condition The piece is in excellent antique condition overall, particularly considering its age and the inherently fragile construction. The porcelain figure presents beautifully. Most importantly, the arms, hands and delicate individual fingers are intact, with no obvious chips, cracks or repairs visible from the photographs. The period textile shade is exceptionally well preserved for its age while naturally displaying some age-related wear, minor marks, fading, loose threads and deterioration to areas of the lace consistent with an approximately century-old textile object. These signs of age have deliberately been left untouched. The shade has not been dismantled to search for a manufacturer’s mark. Any possible mark would be concealed beneath the original construction. Dismantling the piece could damage the surviving period textiles and compromise its originality, and therefore it has deliberately been left intact. No attribution to a particular manufacturer or country of origin is being made. This is an exceptionally decorative survivor and a much less commonly encountered form of half-doll collecting, combining an elegant porcelain figure with a substantial period boudoir lampshade. Its large size, beautifully modelled figure, elaborate surviving textiles and, especially, the preservation of the delicate porcelain hands and fingers make it a particularly desirable example for collectors of antique porcelain half dolls, boudoir dolls, Art Deco-era decorative objects, antique lampshades and early 20th-century textiles. Date: Approximately 1920s–1930s Origin/Maker: Unconfirmed – piece has deliberately not been dismantled Materials: Glazed porcelain, textile, lace, velvet ribbon and shade framework Porcelain figure: Approx. 9 cm high Overall dimensions: Approx. 28 × 16 × 16 cm Condition: Excellent antique condition overall with age-related wear to the period textiles.
