Figural mantel clock

Spectacular clock, almost one meter high, in patinated bronze and gilded chiseled bronze illustrating one of the famous episodes of Ovid's Metamorphoses: Perseus rescuing Andromeda. We see the two main characters at the crucial moment when Perseus arrives, borne by Pegasus, on the rock to which Andromeda is chained. The latter, rendered with extraordinary fineness of chisel-work, are in bronze with a medal-brown patina, certainly from the workshop of Pierre-Philippe Thomire. This perfect execution of the smallest details allows the spectator to feel the deep relief of Andromeda surrendering to a devoted Perseus. The whole rests on a substantial base highlighted by a broad frieze of water leaves, acanthus leaves and olive scrolls in gilded bronze. The two front feet take the form of the Kraken, the mythical sea monster, to perfect the representation. Rare for its subject and its size, this very large clock is also remarkable for its quality of execution. Very good state of conservation. Beautiful fusee movement, characteristic of the late 18th century and early 19th century, in perfect working order, serviced by an art clockmaker. The myth: that of Cassiopeia, queen of Ethiopia. She, having proclaimed herself more beautiful than the Nereids, incited their anger. They appealed to Poseidon who, to defend their honor, sent a sea monster to ravage the south of the country. Only the sacrifice of Andromeda, daughter of Cassiopeia, can ultimately stop it. Perseus, having fallen in love with the princess, offers her parents, King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia, to rescue her from the monster in exchange for her hand.
