Songye Statues Songye statues are often figures of power called mankishi (singular: nkishi). They were linked to the protection of the community, to healing, to justice, and to mediation with the spiritual world. They are often recognizable by: a head large in relation to the body; geometric features and a severe expression; a body carved in a relatively simplified manner; sometimes nails, pieces of metal, substances or accessories, depending on the function of the piece; an upright posture, giving an impression of strength and authority.
