Original framed watercolor by the painter Fernand Roux (1906-1994). The painting signed by the artist at the bottom right. Dedication and signature also on the back. Dated 1935 for the dedication; the artist was 29 years old. With a restrained style, poetic expressionism, almost minimalist like his Palma canvases. Fernand Roux is from the Toulouse school. He studied with Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, among others. Roger Acheriteguy (from the Sud Ouest newspaper) wrote, "Fernand Roux, Matisse’s preferred painter." He participated in numerous exhibitions in France—in Toulouse, Nice, Marseille, Paris—as well as in: Brussels, Barcelona, Bogotá, Caracas, Cuba, the U.S.A. (Houston, New York, Chicago...).... The painting and the frame are in very good condition. A little dust between the matting and the glass at the bottom left. The painting is accompanied by a booklet (undated) gathering newspaper articles, dedications from friends and other painters, lists of his major exhibitions, references, official commissions and bibliography... plus a small drawing of a bullfighter. See the press articles in the booklet provided with the painting, the compliments from his friends and mentors (Sacha Guitry, Henri Matisse, Jean Cocteau, César...) and notably on the first page of the program a handwritten passage that says: “An extremely popular French artist, Fernand Roux, is listed in the Bénézit (an international dictionary of well known artists). He has studied with Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso among others. His soft, lyrical watercolors depict the magnificent landscapes of Southern Europe. His major exhibitions: Paris, Brussels, New York, Chicago and Caracas.” translated from English: “An extremely popular French artist, Fernand Roux is listed in the Bénézit (an international dictionary of well known artists). He has studied with Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso among other. His soft, lyrical watercolors depict the lovely landscapes of Southern Europe. His major exhibitions: Paris, Brussels, New York, Chicago and Caracas.” Dimensions of the canvas: approximately 25x30 cm, close to transitional format F4 (21x33). Frame dimensions: 54x44x2.5 cm Photographs are an integral part of the description. No reserve price. Approximate package dimensions: 60x50x10 (about 5 kg).
