Felice Campi (Mantua 1746 - 1817) Portrait of a Philosopher Oil on canvas 98x76 cm with the period frame as a gift, 86x67 cm the canvas alone The work is signed and dated at the bottom left Work in decent conservational condition, varnish slightly yellowed and in need of cleaning. Felice trained at the local Academy, following in the footsteps of Giuseppe Bazzani, first, and then Giuseppe Bottani. He made a trip to Venice, where he studied Titian, Paolo Veronese and Tintoretto. In 1784, upon Bottani’s death, Campi was called to the Mantua Academy of Fine Arts, later the Virgilian Academy, as a professor of drawing. He was a notable representative of Neoclassical painting, active not only in Mantua but also in Piacenza and in the territories of Brescia and Reggio Emilia, where frescoes remain in churches and noble palaces. Furthermore, he was commissioned for important institutional assignments, such as the official portrait of Empress Maria Theresa, in 1775; in 1805, on the occasion of Bonaparte’s visit to Mantua, he painted a triumphal arch; finally, in 1811, still within the Napoleonic era, he executed an allegory of the Arts celebrating the apotheosis of the Emperor. accurate packing and shipping guaranteed.
