Tutte le aste / Libri, Mappe & Manoscritti / f. antonmarchi/leonardo gallois - La storia di NAPOLEONE / Memorie del dottor F
First Volume: History of Napoleon (1828) Full title: History of Napoleon compiled from his own memoirs by Leonardo Gallois Edition: First Italian vulgarization for the third French edition. Part I. Publisher and Place: At G. Ruggia & Comp. in Lugano (falsely or generically indicated on the title page as "Italy"). Year: 1828 Notable: The volume includes a fine frontispiece portrait of Napoleon in uniform, engraved in lithography or photogravure. Leonardo Gallois was a respected French historian known for his biographies and historical compendia of the early 19th century. Second Volume: Memoirs of Dr. F. Antommarchi (1827) Full title: Memoirs of Dr. F. Antommarchi, or The Last Moments of Napoleon Edition: First translation from French. Volume Two. Place and Year: Italy, 1827. Historical context: François Antommarchi was Napoleon Bonaparte’s personal physician during his exile on Saint Helena, from 1819 until the emperor’s death in 1821. These memoirs describe in detail the physical decline, illness, and autopsy of the sovereign, representing one of the most important direct historical sources on his end. These are antique editions (from the late Restoration period) Conservation: The leaves show widespread browning (the typical brownish spots due to iron oxidation or the acidity of old paper), a very common feature for books printed in the early decades of the 19th century. The binding of the spine and boards remains solid and with the gold of the titles clearly legible. The volumes feature an era-appropriate half-leather binding from the time of publication (second quarter of the 19th century), a packaging style typical of the bourgeoisie and collectors of the 1800s.
