Extravagant Vintage Necklace by Bent Gabrielsen Pedersen with Rutile

Rutilated quartz is one of those gemstones that derive their special beauty not just from their clarity or colour, but from what is enclosed within them. Fine, needle-shaped crystals of the mineral rutile run through the transparent quartz and form an ever-changing network of golden to copper-coloured lines. They are abstract drawings of nature that appear inside the stone. These inclusions are formed under special geological conditions: As the quartz crystallizes, the rutile needles grow into it and remain trapped inside. No two stones are the same. Some show delicate, almost floating structures, others are reminiscent of bundled rays or small suns that are trapped inside the quartz. This necklace from around 1975 has a deliberately extravagant design - and is entirely focused on the unusual staging of the large rutilated quartz for which it was handcrafted. The stone, which is cut into a tall cabochon, seems to glow on its own and changes between a golden shimmer and a misty white depending on the light. The stone weighs around 65 carats. The rutilated quartz is set in warm, shimmering gold and hangs flexibly in the large pendant. The contrast with the simple framing ring and the dynamically powerful chain links with their slightly marbled surface is particularly effective. The necklace comes from the workshop of Bent Gabrielsen Pedersen in the Danish city of Kolding. Pedersen was born in Copenhagen in 1928 and also studied there. From 1969 to 1988, he ran his own studio in the Danish town of Kolding. The necklace is in very good condition and is both an unusual and expressive accessory of Danish mid-century design.
