This ring is a true jewel. No ornament or fashionable design determines its appeal. First and foremost, it is the large sapphire at its center that defines this ring. It is a large, sky-blue sapphire weighing more than eight carats. It is transparent and has a wonderful, royal blue color. Its cut with a large table gives the eye the opportunity to view the light reflections inside the stone. The most famous place of origin for blue sapphires is the island of Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, south-east of the Indian subcontinent. Ceylon is considered to be the oldest mining area for these precious gemstones, and according to contemporary reports, Ceylon sapphires were already being set into pieces of jewellery by the Greeks and Romans in classical antiquity. Even King Solomon is said to have wooed the legendary Queen of Sheba with sapphires from the area around Ratnapura, which means "city of precious stones" in Sinhalese. The sapphire in this ring also comes from Sri Lanka. Two white triangle-cut diamonds, known as "trilliants", elegantly transition from the large center stone to the ring band. The settings of the gemstones are made of high-carat white gold. The ring band is made of high-carat yellow gold, following the example of historical jewellery. It also bears a number of hallmarks on the inside, indicating that the ring was made in London in 1997. Two detailed certificates have confirmed the quality of the materials and the origin of the sapphire. They are supplied with the ring. We discovered it in Bath in the south of England.
