Exquisite Antique Gold Ring with Burmese Ruby & Diamonds, c. 1900

This ring immediately captivated us with its vibrant colour: In addition to warm gold and sparkling diamonds, it features a stunning ruby in a fiery pink-red hue. It is a ruby from Burma, the classic and most prized source of top-quality rubies. It is naturally formed and untreated—that is, it has not been heated or color-enhanced. Set opposite the ruby is an old European cut diamond weighing approximately 0.48 ct. Designs featuring two different yet roughly equal-sized gemstones were extremely popular c. 1900: People loved playing with symbols, and in the imagination of the time, two lovers face each other here—recognizable as distinct elements, yet firmly bound by their love. Smaller diamonds adorn the ring shoulders, which gently nestle against the two larger gemstones. The gemstones can certainly also be interpreted symbolically: they are diamonds—stones of eternity—paired here with a ruby, the stone in the classic colour of love. Rings with delicately curved bands were particularly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Inspired by the dynamic forms of Art Nouveau, these jewellery fashions quickly became a great success. The ring’s warm color palette and its high-quality setting featuring diamonds and a Burmese ruby set it apart from many other rings of the period. We date it c. 1900.
