Descriptio Eastern Iran, Nishapur (Khorasan). Samanid period, 10th century. Ceramic with white slip and black underglaze decoration. Diameter: 28 cm. Height: 10 cm. A striking example belonging to the renowned epigraphic production of Nishapur, one of the most influential ceramic centers in the Islamic world during the Samanid period. This bowl features an elegant, open silhouette and a surface treated with white slip upon which unfolds, in deep black, a broad calligraphic band in angular Kufic script. The inscription, executed freely and highly stylized, reveals a formal knowledge of Arabic script—with clear evocations of alif, lam, and curvilinear strokes—transformed into an autonomous visual language. This type of composition, where legibility yields to rhythm and graphic force, constitutes one of the most sophisticated developments in early Islamic ceramics, anticipating a sensibility surprisingly close to modern abstraction. Beyond their utilitarian function, these bowls embody a fundamental transformation in Islamic art: the elevation of writing to a universal decorative principle, where meaning and form intertwine in a single gesture. The patina, glaze craquelure, and surface wear are fully consistent with the piece’s age and contribute to its material authenticity and aesthetic appeal.
