Evzen Nevan (1914-1967) - Porträt zwei junge Damen am Kaffeetisch

Evzen Nevan (1914-1967) - Porträt zwei junge Damen am Kaffeetisch

Signed oil painting by the Slovak painter and graphic artist Evžen (Eugen) Nevan (1914–1967) depicting two young women in a color-intensive interior. The two women sit facing each other and toward the viewer at a laid table. Flowers, vessels, and other objects form a still life within the figure composition. Characteristic are the strong color fields, the simplified formal language, and the dark outlines that separate figures and objects from one another. The painting is signed lower left with “E. Nevan.” Artist Evžen Nevan, also Eugen Nevan, was born in 1914 in Mohács and died in 1967 in Bratislava. He worked as a painter and graphic artist. His work is closely linked to modern Czechoslovak and Slovak painting of the 20th century. As early as the 1940s, his works were presented in independent exhibitions; for 1944 an exhibition at the Topičův salon in Prague is documented, and for 1946 an exhibition of his paintings and drawings at the Pošova Gallery in Prague. Of particular interest for the present painting is Nevan’s engagement with French modernism and, in particular, with Henri Matisse. In an art-historical expert assessment of another work by Nevan, emphasis is placed on his stay in Paris in 1937 and the lasting influence that the encounter with Henri Matisse’s work had on his painting. Among other things, the development toward abstracted, flat forms, the restriction to dark linear contours, and a Fauvist handling of pure color fields and decorative forms are highlighted. These features can also be clearly traced in the painting offered here. Interesting comparison with Henri Matisse Of particular interest is the compositional proximity of the present painting to a work by Henri Matisse from 1920: Henri Matisse (1869–1954) Intérieur à Nice, Mesdemoiselles Matisse et Darricarrère 1920 Oil on canvas 46.4 × 65.4 cm Inventory number AM 3848 P The work is documented in the collection of the Musée national d’art moderne / Centre Pompidou. Official catalog entry of the Centre Pompidou: https://www.centrepompidou.fr/en/ressources/oeuvre/cRRqL8 The Matisse painting also shows two female figures in an interior strongly divided by color. In both compositions, the arrangement of the two women, the incorporation of a table into the figure composition, flowers and vessels as decorative elements, and the strong division of the interior by color fields are particularly noticeable. The connection of figure painting, interior, and still life, as well as the flat treatment of individual painting elements, also yields an interesting art-historical comparison. There is no direct proof that Nevan used the specific Matisse painting as an immediate model for the present work. The comparison is therefore not claimed as evidence of a direct copy or source. However, it is of particular art-historical interest because Nevan’s engagement with Henri Matisse’s work and the influence of French modernism on his own painting are documented.
