EUBENA NAMPITJIN, Kinyu, 2007

EUBENA NAMPITJIN Wangkajunga/Kukatja languages, c.1921 - 2013 Kinyu, 2007 acrylic on linen 150 x 100 cm bears inscription verso: Warlayirti Artists, Eubena Nampitjin, 1500x1000, 472/07 PROVENANCE Warlayirti Artists, Western Australia, Cat No. 472/07 Woolloongabba Art Gallery, Queensland Private Collection, Queensland Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Warlayirti Artists In this work, Eubena Nampitjin depicts her ancestral Country southwest of Balgo, along the middle stretches of the Canning Stock Route. Much of the composition represents the tali (sandhills) that dominate this desert landscape, while the central circles mark Midjul, an important tjurrnu (soakwater). Midjul is associated with Kinyu, the spirit dog, who inhabits this Country. Nampitjin recalled covering the soakwater with leaves to prevent Kinyu from emerging, and leaving gifts of goanna for him. These practices speak to her intimate knowledge of Country and the responsibilities associated with particular places and ancestral beings. Through her characteristic fields of colour and rhythmic forms, Nampitjin maps a landscape understood not simply through its physical features, but through the ancestral stories, memories and cultural knowledge embedded within it. © EUBENA NAMPITJIN / Copyright Agency, 2026
