Kettle on Rechaud – Carl Deffner, Esslingen – Champlevé Enamel – ca. 1900 A rare highlight from the German Jugendstil period (Art Nouveau): a stunning copper and brass kettle on an organically shaped three-legged stand (rechaud) including the original spirit burner. This masterpiece was designed and crafted by the world-renowned metalwares manufacturer Carl Deffner from Esslingen, Germany, circa 1895–1900. The Carl Deffner metalware factory (active between 1815 and 1969) stood at the absolute top of European artisanship around the turn of the century. Their Jugendstil designs excel in the perfect balance between functionality and high-quality, artistic form, directly competing with renowned studios such as WMF. What makes this particular piece exceptionally rare is the refined band with champlevé enamel (zellenschmelz) on the body of the kettle. In the copper, deeper recesses were cut out and manually inlaid with jet-black glass powder and then baked. This results in a beautiful, smoothly polished contrast between the warm copper and the deep black enamel. The decoration features a graceful, stylized floral motif, with the dynamic “whiplash” lines typical of Art Nouveau. The flowing lines are carried beautifully throughout the rest of the object: from the elegantly twisted brass handle to the three-dimensional, organically forged three-legged stand that supports the kettle like a chalice. Although Deffner copper pieces are beloved by collectors, this specific version with the champlevé enamel band is rarely on the market. Most kettles produced at the time were made purely in copper or brass. An example in this complete condition — including stand and burner — is an absolute coup for the connoisseur and collector of high-quality Jugendstil antiques. Marked with the well-known CDE mark on the base Dating: Circa 1895 – 1900 Material: Red copper, yellow copper (brass) and champlevé enamel The item is in a beautiful, authentic antique condition with light signs of aging (slight dents and enamel loss); minimal signs of aging and use are appropriate for a functional object of over 120 years old. See the detail photos for an accurate personal impression of the excellent condition. The lot will be carefully, professionally packed and worldwide insured with Track & Trace
