Enki Bilal - Offset Print - Chess Boxing

This artwork is "Chess Boxing" by the renowned French comic artist and filmmaker Enki Bilal. It is an iconic panel taken from "Froid Équateur" (Cold Equator), which is the third and final volume of his acclaimed sci-fi graphic novel masterpiece, the Nikopol Trilogy (La Trilogie Nikopol). The scene takes place in a freezing, dystopian version of Equator City. The streets are populated by a surreal mixture of humans, penguins, and polar bears. Walking down the street is Alcide Nikopol (or his son, who shares a striking resemblance), the central figure of the trilogy. On the right wall is a poster advertising a "Chess-Boxing World Championship" match between Loopkin and Johnelvisson. This comic panel is famous for inventing the actual sport of chessboxing. The filmmaker Iepe Rubingh was inspired by this exact Bilal comic and turned the fictional hybrid sport into a real-world athletic discipline in 2003.
