Empire periode - Sokkel of Somno kast - Draagt stempel...

This unique and versatile piece of furniture can serve as a central reception table, as a platform for a work of art, or as a living room piece. It features a sunken gray marble top, with beneath it a drawer and two storage compartments. The upper cabinet door opens by means of a twist knob, while the lower door opens with a key. The veneer is of beautifully warm mahogany and has a deep patina. The front of this piece is flanked on both sides by tapering columns, adorned with bronze elements in the form of two caryatids. The piece was made during the Consulate period, in the early years of Napoleon I’s reign. A somno presents itself as a small piece of furniture, in the shape of a cylindrical or square table, composed of a closed portion that provides storage space. This fine piece has been professionally restored in France. It has a few wood-boring insect holes, but they are inactive and were effectively treated at the time. Jean-Joseph Chapuis (6 June 1765 – 10 February 1864) was a French cabinetmaker of the 18th and 19th centuries. Furniture by Jean-Joseph Chapuis is rarely found in public collections outside France. There are only individual pieces by Chapuis found, not collections, making it impossible to provide an exact overview of everything he produced during his life. The Saint-Josse-ten-Noode Museum, Brussels, Belgium, is the only one that owns several labeled pieces of Chapuis’ furniture. We recommend you study the photos carefully so you can fully appreciate the condition and the distinctive variety of this precious and rare object. You can also use the zoom function on the photos so you can inspect the object thoroughly to your satisfaction. Questions? ..auctioneer) The item will be shipped very well packed
