Important set of 10 manuscript leaves in Arabic, i.e. 20 recto-verso pages, originating from a learned treatise devoted mainly to Arabic logic – ʿilm al-manṭiq (علم المنطق) and to the mechanisms of reasoning. These leaves constitute a particularly interesting section of the treatise, developing the functioning of logical propositions and their constituents, the relations between terms, the different forms of affirmation and negation, as well as the conditions allowing the establishment of a valid argument. The text notably addresses notions of premises, universal and particular propositions, positive and negative terms, as well as the logical relations enabling the construction of a demonstration. Several passages also examine the combination of propositions and the conditions of validity of their sequence, a domain directly associated with the classical theory of the syllogism (qiyās). The structure of the treatise appears clearly organized into chapters. One of the leaves bears in the margin, in red ink, the Arabic inscription الباب الرابع (al-bāb al-rābiʿ), meaning the fourth chapter. Other textual articulations are also indicated in red, notably chapter or section indications, confirming the methodological construction of a genuine manual or treatise of instruction. It is an Islamic manuscript by its intellectual and educational context, logic traditionally constituting an important instrumental science in Muslim scholarly education. It served, in particular, to structure the argumentation employed in dialectical theology (kalām), Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) and in the foundations of law (uṣūl al-fiqh). Manuscript carefully executed in black ink, with numerous structural elements and red-ink underlinings. The text is laid out within a red rectangular frame with a double border, a particularly decorative feature that gives the leaves a homogeneous and neat presentation. Regular Arabic script, dense and relatively elegant, corresponding to a manuscript intended for study. Old paper of traditional manufacture, showing the irregularities and signs of use expected, aging, peripheral browning, small stains, smudges, folds and marginal wear, without significantly hindering the overall legibility of the manuscript. 18th century, Circa 1750–1800, by paleographic, codicological and stylistic criteria. A particularly representative ensemble of the manuscript tradition of science and philosophy in the Islamic world, bearing witness to the teaching of Aristotelian logic and its integration into the Arab and pre-modern Islamic scholarly culture.
