This brooch presents two hand-painted porcelain panels based on a design by one of the most important artists of the Vienna Secession, Josef Hoffmann. Hoffmann was a co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte (1903) and had a decisive influence on its creative direction. Together with Koloman Moser, he pursued the ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk, in which architecture, interiors and everyday objects were formally coordinated. Hoffmann was characterized by a geometrically reduced formal language, often structured by the square, which became so proverbial that it earned him the nickname "Quadratl Hoffmann". The two porcelain panels of the brooch show the "Mythos" pattern, which Hoffmann designed for the Augarten porcelain manufactory in 1929. His design is developed from geometry and is monochrome black and white. "Mythos" illustrates Hoffmann's ability to combine the ornamental tradition of European art with the reduced formal language of late Viennese Modernism. The precise lines are characteristic, even though each of the panels looks slightly different. The Viennese porcelain manufactory Augarten can look back on a long tradition and is one of the oldest porcelain manufactories in Europe. Towards the end of the 20th century, it expanded its range to include jewelry objects. The design of the brooch made of luxurious sterling silver was based on Josef Hoffmann's "Mythos" pattern and combines the two hand-painted porcelain panels to form a horizontal S-shape. We were lucky enough to discover a small number of these brooches. They are unworn, in very good condition and an elegant testimony to the formal language of classic Viennese Modernism.
