Exceptional and rare homogeneous ensemble of 109 original collection pieces from the first half of the 20th century (circa 1900-1940). This lot, with unique documentary richness, brings together studio shots, true fine art photographs, collotypes and phototypies. It gathers signatures of the most prestigious colonial photographers and art publishers of the era, offering a major historical testimony on Egyptian archaeology, Islamic architecture, and Levantine antique landscapes. Detailed composition of the lot (109 pieces total) 1. The Archaeological Fonds, Tomb of Tutankhamun and Temples of Upper Egypt (50 pieces) * Official and studio clichés of treasures discovered in 1922: close-ups and three-quarter views of the famous gold funerary mask, and a rare view of Tutankhamun's mummy resting in its sarcophagus. * Monumental views of the great sites: the pyramids of Giza with the Great Sphinx (enslaved and excavated versions), the Memnon statues, the Avenue of Sphinxes at Karnak, the interior of the hypostyle hall and the obelisks. * Architecture and sites in progress: scenes of archaeological excavations with workers and lifting systems, rubble of sculpted blocks, views of Philæ, Dendera, Luxor, and Hatshepsut Temple at Deir el-Bahari. * Scientific surveys: photographic reproductions of polychrome wall frescoes, hieroglyphs, royal cartouches and bas-reliefs of royal tombs (notably Thutmose III and Ramesses IX). 2. The Lehnert and Landrock Fonds, Scenes of Life and Nilus Landscapes (18 pieces) * Real silver gelatin photographs from the period on Velox paper. * Panoramas and Orientalist scenes: the enormous reclining statue of Ramesses II at Memphis, leafy landscapes along the Nile and Jordan shores in the Holy Land. * Genre scenes of daily life: groups of Egyptian women in traditional dress carrying pitchers, shepherds with flocks under palm trees, peasants with livestock and market vendors. 3. Levant under French Mandate: Syria and Lebanon (22 pieces) * Islamic architecture of Damascus: views of the Great Mosque of Damascus (inner courtyard, arcades, prayer hall and sculpted facade), interiors of richly carved Damascene palaces, Azem Palace and Zahiriya Madrasa. * Urbanism and landscapes of Lebanon: bustling scenes of the Port of Beirut crowded with ships, the Avenue des Français, the Place des Canons and the landscapes along the Chien River (Nahr el-Kalb). * Levantine archaeology: ruins of Baalbek and detailed on-site photographs of the famous Phoenician Hiram sarcophagus discovered at Byblos. 4. Islamic Egypt and Colonial Urban Views (19 pieces) * Medieval Cairo panoramas: views of the Sultan Hassan Mosque, the fortified entrance to the Citadel, the Blue Mosque of Aqsunqur and picturesque alleys. * Alexandria panoramas: the Place des Consuls with its carriages, Sidi Gaber Mosque, Attarine Mosque and views of the colonial harbor basins. ## Editors, techniques and condition * Prestigious signatures: The lot stands out with 28 prints and cards from the famous Lehnert & Landrock house (Cairo). It also includes rare editions from P. Condopoulo (Aswan), the Institut Français of Damascus, Librairie Stamboul, Sarrafian Bros (Beirut), Zogopoulo Frères, P.C.M.J. and a workshop stamp of Luigi Stironi. * Backside characteristics: The reverse sides are largely clean, unused and uncirculated, which is exceptional for a lot of this size. Several Near Eastern pieces bear old traces of mounting or album backs, certifying provenance from period archives. Some old pencil notes (Philae, Bicharis, Elephantine). * General condition: Excellent overall condition. The cardboard supports are fresh and the emulsions offer superb sharpness with deep contrasts and sepia renditions of great artistic value. Light wear at the corners confirms the lot’s age.
