The models show the three basic forms of crystal systems as studied in crystallography. They are constructed from metal rods and spherical joints and visualize the three-dimensional arrangement of crystal lattices. Originally manufactured for educational use, to give students insight into the structure and symmetry of crystals. The set includes a cubic crystal system, in which all axes are equal and perpendicular to each other, a monoclinic crystal system with two perpendicular axes and a third axis at an angle, and a triclinic crystal system, the least symmetrical, in which all axes differ in length and none are perpendicular, resulting in an oblique unit cell. The dimensions per model are approximately 20 to 25 cm and the condition is used with visible signs of age and light oxidation on the metal, appropriate to the age.
