The surface preserves a significant matereal richness and texture, typical of the technique used by the artist. 2. DESCRIPTION An interesting urban and river landscape of French school, created around the mid-20th century and signed “Maximilien.” The composition represents a group of buildings located beside a watercourse, crossed by a bridge of strong structural presence. The scene is constructed through an extremely personal technique, based on the layering of paint and a continuous incision of the material through short, crossed, and repeated lines. The result generates a vibrant, almost graphic surface, in which architecture, vegetation, sky, and reflections appear built through an interlacement of pictorial gestures. The work combines a recognizable vision of the landscape with a strong will of plastic experimentation. 3. STYLISTIC AND COMPOSitional ANALYSIS The composition is part of the evolution of French post-impressionist landscape painting during the first half and mid-20th century. The artist abandons a strictly naturalistic representation to focus on structure, rhythm, and texture. Architectural forms are not described with closed outlines, but through a multitude of overlapped strokes. The sky is formed by long diagonal and vertical incisions that introduce a strong sense of movement. The façades, trees, and the surface of the water are built with shorter, interwoven strokes, creating different rhythms within the composition. The bridge is one of the main structural elements of the work. Its large reddish arch establishes a chromatic and geometric contrast with the dark greens of the landscape and the cool tones of the sky. 4. ATMOSPHERIC DIMENSION One of the most interesting aspects of the painting lies in the ambient sensation. The scene seems to unfold under a cool, changing light, probably after rain or at a moment of high atmospheric humidity. The dominant tones are deep greens, blues, grays, whites, and earth tones.
